Mandatory Data Sharing Law for Auto Industry

Mandatory Data Sharing Law

The Australian Government has introduced a mandatory data sharing law that is a huge boost for the Automotive Aftermarket industry.

Through lobbying and a lot of hard work by the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (https://aaaa.com.au) over a long period of time, the law will create a huge boost for the aftermarket making it simpler to get the information required to carry out complex repairs on more modern vehicles. Previously, this data was very hard to obtain, and in many cases impossible. The data sharing law , will make a positive change for the aftermarket as well as increased options for consumers.

The law makes it illegal for manufacturers to withhold information from qualified independent mechanical repair businesses.

“The manufacturer network has attempted to block the aftermarket industry and muscle it out of the market through these practices.” sais James Mitchell, CEO Workshop Software. “There has been a number of attempts to make this right, including a voluntary scheme which ultimately did not work. It took further work by the AAAA and government to ultimately require legislation which is now in place with an outcome of clarity around the requirements to share data with the industry.”

“This is another step forward in educating consumers that the dealership network do not have a hold over service and repair of new vehicles. Many consumers think that they must take their car to a dealership, which simply is not the case. As an industry, we need to educate consumers about their rights and that they can often get better service and value through the aftermarket industry. We have an obligation to continue to work hard in educating the market, to ensure the validity and growth of the aftermarket, and I applaud the work the AAAA have achieved and welcome the new laws”, continued Mitchell.

A strong aftermarket is positive for all, and the more we can educate consumers the stronger the industry will be. Let’s continue to ensure that the manufacturers do what is required and create a more even playing field for all. The mandatory data sharing law is just one step in the continued development of the aftermarket industry.
